How we are going to do it

Mission: Support communities along the Kenya in all areas of Co management of marine resources.

Vision: Sustainable seas through building of local leadership, sharing best practice, securing financial stability, making fishers voices heard.

OA wishes to maintain healthy, well managed, and sustainable marine resources and ecosystems along the coast of Kenya. We aim to improve and where necessary establish locally appropriate governance systems for the marine resources. Ocean Alive pillars; Conservation, Enterprise, Welfare.

Enterprise

Creating Enterprise both within the marine initiative and outside is a necessity to relieve the pressure on the coastal resources. As the population increases so does the pressure on the resources that the communities rely on. Setting up alternative sustainable income generating opportunities and PPP’s that suit each particular community is central to OA’s objectives. A percentage of profits generated will be distributed back to the pillar programmes.

Enterprise objectives

  • Work alongside communities to mitigate continued resource-driven marine degradation and enhance community safety along the coast in order to provide an enabling environment for all further development.
  • Stabilise impoverished coastal communities using nature-based enterprises and marine conservation as the catalyst;
  • Diversify livelihood options, thereby reducing communities’ current economic vulnerability.
  • Generate new economic opportunities and infrastructure enabling disadvantaged communities to achieve financial independence and long-term income security (transition from a state of dependency to sustainability).
  • Enhance efficiency, productivity and sustainability of extractive and non-extractive natural resource use.
  • Assist in securing community resilience to unpredictable events ad destabilizing external factors like sea rise through climate change
  • Build institutional capacity, enhance local governance and increase participation in democratisation;

Welfare

Improvement of the community livelihoods will be a bi-product of the conservation and enterprise pillars. Conservation + Enterprise = Improved welfare

Welfare objectives

  • Replace community despondency with hope and aspiration for the future;
  • Enable currently marginalised communities to benefit from, participate in and contribute to the economic, social, technological and democratic progress of their country.
  • Improve access to water, healthcare, education, and vocational training in underserved communities.
  • Improve livelihoods
  • Create social, economic and environmental awareness

Conservation

Conserving the biodiversity on the Kenyan coast is the lynch pin at the core of OA’s objectives. Co-management of marine resources under the new Beach management unit jurisdictions needs to be put in place to ensure the resource is handed down in a good state for future generations.

Conservation objectives

  • Enhance conservation and security of the natural environment and all marine- life, including endangered species.
  • Encourage local, national and international participation in marine-life and environmental conservation.
  • Expand CCA’s and create a network between them
  • Reduce over exploitation of marine resources through assistance with implementation of mitigation measures.
  • Secure ecosystem services by protecting biodiversity.
  • Promote the value of a healthy marine environment as a national and international asset.
  • Create awareness and understanding of marine welfare issues.
  • Support scientific research where it enhances marine environmental management capacity.
  • Encourage support for community participation in conservation enterprises and build community capacity to implement such initiatives.
  • Improve the quality of and access to environmental and conservation education
  • Create multimedia content to make information about CCA’s more widely available, to encourage tourism to them and to highlight the community development and conservation roles played by Ocean Alive and its partners;
  • Create awareness of environmental and conservation issues across Kenya, Africa and the world, encouraging more people to “become part of the solution”;
  • Develop relevant multimedia products to share successful community enterprises models, thereby enabling their replication further afield
